The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) has reinforced its commitment to international maritime standards by ensuring its technical team stays up to date on the amended Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006).
As a cornerstone for safeguarding fair and safe working conditions for seafarers, the amended MLC 2006 plays a vital role in the maritime industry.
The training, led by Ms. Giovanna Villamonte, Head of the MLC Section within the Technical Department of Analysis and Certification (Segumar), addressed critical issues such as seafarers’ rights, financial protections, and shipowners’ responsibilities.
Designed for the Ship Maritime Protection Department team, this initiative strengthens the PMA’s ability to ensure that all vessels flying the Panamanian flag meet international regulations on terrorism, money laundering, and other illicit activities.
With advanced monitoring tools like the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and the Long-Range Identification and Tracking System (LRIT), the PMA maintains strict oversight of Panamanian ships, ensuring compliance with global standards.
“This training reaffirms our commitment to keeping the Panamanian fleet at the forefront of maritime safety and regulatory excellence,” said Villamonte.
She added that the Panama Ship Registry will continue to enhance its processes, ensuring that every vessel meets the highest standards, contributing to a safer and more sustainable maritime industry.
