The Panama-flagged MV Rukbat Star carried out a daring rescue of 53 individuals stranded aboard a rubber boat in perilous conditions. The incident took place on December 28, 2024, in waters near Morocco’s coastline, west of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), through its Embassy and General Consulate in Greece, extended heartfelt gratitude and recognition to the vessel’s crew for their swift and courageous actions.

Under the command of Captain Alckeikh Rafat, the MV Rukbat Star responded with precision and urgency, showcasing exceptional coordination to save the lives of all 53 people. The crew’s efforts reflect the bravery, compassion, and professionalism that define seafarers worldwide.

This successful operation was further strengthened by close cooperation with maritime rescue coordination centers in Las Palmas and Rabat, ensuring the safe transfer of survivors to a Royal Moroccan Navy vessel. The incident underscores the Rukbat Star’s steadfast commitment to the protection of human life at sea and highlights the critical role of international partnerships in maritime safety.

The PMA celebrated the crew’s exemplary dedication, praising them as a shining example for the global maritime community. Their actions not only saved lives but also reaffirmed the values of solidarity and humanity that underpin Panama’s maritime tradition.

“We are immensely proud that a vessel flying our nation’s flag has so profoundly embodied the principles that represent Panama across the world’s oceans,” stated H.E. Julie Lymberópulos, Panama’s Ambassador and General Consul in Greece.

This rescue stands as a testament to the importance of collaboration and preparedness in overcoming the challenges of open-sea navigation. The PMA continues to support and recognize the invaluable contributions of seafarers who uphold the highest standards of safety and compassion.
